MetaMask co-founder, Dan Finlay, said that the world's most popular Ethereum wallet is still considering launching its own Token.
When asked about this possibility in The Block's "Crypto Beat" podcast, Finlay smiled and replied: "Possibly."
"If we launch a Token, you will see direct notifications in the wallet, with clear links right in the application," Finlay said in the interview.
Currently, MetaMask has no specific plans, but Finlay noted that the legal landscape is changing - especially if the US under the Trump administration becomes "more open", making Token launch safer. He hopes this will open opportunities for the industry to develop new legal and creative models.
The idea of a MetaMask Token - possibly named MASK - has been mentioned since 2021. An engineer once proposed issuing a Token for wallet community ownership, and ConsenSys CEO, Joseph Lubin, subsequently hinted about this on social media with the question "Wen $MASK?"
In 2022, Lubin clearly stated that MetaMask plans to launch a Token with a DAO, as a step towards gradually decentralizing ConsenSys products. The DAO is positioned as a funding mechanism rather than a governance organization, and the MASK Token is not intended for "quick earnings", with measures against airdrop hunting.
However, Finlay noted that securities law remains securities law, alluding to former SEC Chairman Gary Gensler's stance that most current Tokens can be considered securities. Many projects are still operating in the "gray" area of the law.
Additionally, Finlay was cautious about potential fraud risks if the MASK Token is launched. He emphasized:
"If there is a Token, you will not need to click on strange links on social media or messages. We do not have your phone number or email. All official information will be notified in the wallet and on the official MetaMask website."
MetaMask is currently the largest crypto wallet in the world with around 30 million monthly active users (as of 2024), and the development team consists of approximately 500 personnel under the management of ConsenSys.
