Controversial PR 32359 Sparks Debate in Bitcoin Community
On May 7, a report revealed that an individual paid veteran Bitcoin developer Peter Todd to write PR proposal 32359. The goal of this PR is to remove OP_RETURN data restrictions in Bitcoin Core's default memory. According to Samson Mow, CEO of cryptocurrency wallet company Jan3, this is a business initiative, not a natural community idea.
Technical and Cultural Reasons
Antoine Poinsot and Todd from Chaincode Labs provided technical and cultural reasons for removing these restrictions. They argued that current restrictions are ineffective in preventing non-financial on-chain data storage. However, Todd acknowledged that this proposal primarily serves companies.
Controversy Over Motives
Mow suspects someone at Chaincode paid Todd through a "PR money laundering" method, but Poinsot rejected this and claimed Mow was merely seeking attention. Greg Sanders, Core engineer, stated the plan is to implement PR 32359 in the next update, though the maintenance team's intention may change.
Community Reaction
The GitHub community is divided, with diverse opinions from dozens of developers. The number of complete nodes opposing the PR has reached a new peak. On social media, the hashtag #FixTheFilters is trending, with many criticizing Core for serving businesses while neglecting Bitcoin's development.
