Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has spoken out again on the sensitive issue of the relationship between politics and cryptocurrencies. In a tweet on 1/24, he warned that politicians continue to launch "political meme coins," which may become a tool for indirect bribery, posing long-term risks to the crypto industry and democratic institutions.

TogglePolitical MEME coins risk harming the development of the crypto industry and democratic institutions
Vitalik stated that the current crypto regulatory environment has entered a new order, and all parties seem quite enthusiastic about creating any scale of tokens. He warned that these "political MEME coins" that provide short-term gratification may be interesting for the moment, but like "candy," they are sweet in the mouth but have no nutritional value and do not help with real wealth accumulation. He pointed out that large-scale political MEME coins have already crossed the line, not only for entertainment purposes, but may also become a tool for indirect bribery, which may involve the influence of foreign forces.
Calling on voters to carefully select "pro-crypto" candidates
Vitalik's statement echoes his article last July, where he reminded voters not to be easily attracted by candidates who claim to "support crypto," but to delve into the core values of the candidates. In 2018, Vitalik attended a meeting with Russian President Putin, and at the time, many people in the Russian government expressed a willingness to be open-minded towards cryptocurrencies. However, this later led to Vitalik's concerns about the potential for authoritarian "crypto-friendly" governments to use crypto technology to massively manipulate their people.

Although Vitalik did not directly name former US President Donald Trump's TRUMP coin, his comments seem to be strongly criticizing this type of token.
The TRUMP and MELANIA MEME coins are controversial and carry legal risks
Since Trump launched the TRUMP coin on 1/17, it has been the subject of ongoing controversy. Critics have pointed out that foreign governments may be able to purchase TRUMP coins through special channels, thereby influencing the US president's decision-making. According to the US Constitution's Foreign Emoluments Clause, government officials are not allowed to accept gifts from foreign states.
Democratic Senator Elizabeth Warren, known for her opposition to cryptocurrencies, has recently called on US federal agencies to investigate the TRUMP and MELANIA MEME coins launched by President Trump and First Lady Melania.
According to media reports, the Washington-based watchdog organization Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics is considering filing a lawsuit against the TRUMP coin, but whether the token violates the law is still controversial.
